The 7th Grade Math Curriculum – What Students Should Know.

The 7th grade math curriculum is designed to prepare students for pre-algebra. Students will build on their knowledge of basic operations and begin to work with more complex numbers and equations. The focus will be on developing strategic problem-solving skills so that students can confidently approach mathematical challenges. By the end of 7th grade, students should have a strong foundation in arithmetic and be able to apply their skills to new situations.

Topics covered in the 7th grade math curriculum include:

Integers and operations with integers

The 7th grade math curriculum

Students will learn about positive and negative numbers, absolute value, and ordering numbers from least to greatest. They will practice adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers. It is important for students to understand that each operation behaves differently with negative numbers.

Rational numbers

Students will extend their understanding of place value to include decimals and percents. They will learn how to compare, order, and round rational numbers. This is also a good time for students to review basic fraction concepts such as equivalence, comparing fractions, adding and subtracting fractions, and multiplying fractions by whole numbers.

Expressions and equations

Students will use algebraic methods to represent relationships between quantities. They will learn how to write, interpret, and use expressions and equations. This includes solving one- and two-step equations as well as finding equivalent equations.

Graphing linear equations

Students will graph linear equations in two variables using slope-intercept form, standard form, or point-slope form. They will also interpret what these graphs mean in real-world situations. These skills are essential for later courses in which students will encounter more complex functions.


Students will collect data using surveys and experiments. They will organize data using tables and graphs (bar graphs, line plots, pictographs) and find measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode). Interpreting data is an important skill that students can use both inside and outside the classroom.


Students will explore concepts of chance through simulations and experiments. They will calculate theoretical probabilities of events happening and compare these probabilities to the results of their simulations/experiments. Understanding probability can help students make better decisions in everyday life.


In 7th grade geometry

In 7th grade geometry, students focus on developing a robust understanding of Euclidean geometry – points, lines, angles, polygons, perimeter/circumference/area/volume – through informal proof-writing experiences. These experiences set the stage for success in high school geometry or other mathematics courses that require proof-writing skills such as Algebra 2 or Precalculus.”
